THE FIRST CIRCLE

At once global in scope and very personal, the film begins in 2021 in St Petersburg, Russia -- just before the current war -- when an American filmmaker of Russian origin returns to his hometown to direct the classic 19th-century French opera "Les Contes d'Hoffmann" and to search for the home of his mother.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 the underlying spine of the film becomes the opera production itself, set in a surrealistic psychiatric clinic called the Heartbreak Hotel. As the narrative fractures into different parts of the world, the common threads are conflict and turmoil: Ukraine, Russia, Somalia, Kosovo, and New York City.
